What they did
A New York filer put W-2s, 1099s, bank statements and last year's return in one folder and wrote a task.md telling Claude Code to act as a tax preparer. It used sub-agents to pull each document into a short summary, asked questions, saved the answers for the next run, and wrote the figures for federal, state and city returns to a results file.
How it went
It took about 2 hours and 5 fresh runs. The first three failed because the context filled up. He had not filed yet: filling the PDF forms was still error-prone, and its S-Corp advice was off until he pushed back.
Worth knowing
- Start from last year's return. The author says this was not a cold start, and his records were already clean.
- Filling official PDF forms was the hard last mile and fields got missed.
- Treat tax-strategy suggestions as questions for a professional. One estimate changed a lot once he pushed back.
Prompt
Core command is original; setup is cleaned from the source.
You're my tax preparer. Documents are in this folder. Parse each one in a separate sub-agent and save a [name]-summary.md with only the key numbers. Ask me every question you need in one session and save my answers to answers.md. Keep final figures for [federal/state] in result.json. Don't file anything.
Recommended
Try it in Grok Bot
- Copy the prompt (button below).
- Open Grok Bot chat and paste it. Replace any [bracketed] placeholders.
- Connect the listed tools (Local files) as connectors when Grok Bot asks.
- If the task repeats, ask: "Make this a daily routine."
Alternatives: the same prompt works in Claude Code, Claude, ChatGPT Agent, OpenClaw.
Set it up
Tools: Local files · Stack: Claude Code + Local files
- Read the original source for full context.
- Connect the tools your agent needs.
- Paste the prompt and replace [bracketed] placeholders.
- Run once manually and check the output before scheduling it.
