Vandalism 2 Blocks Away, Records Request Filed Minutes Later: A Grok Bot Reads the Sheriff's Daily Report Every Morning

What they did
Want to know about crime on your street without reading police logs? Every morning at 9 this user's Grok Bot downloads the county sheriff's daily incident PDF for their district. It pulls out each incident's type, address, time and case number, maps them and checks for any on a street in the neighborhood. If there's nothing, there's no message. If there is, they get a map with the incident marked. For each one, it signs in to the sheriff's public records portal under their account and requests the police report, then sends back the reference number. It tracks what it has already requested. They set it up by chatting in about an afternoon, and on the first test it caught a vandalism a couple of blocks away.
How it went
A silent daily check that only pings you about incidents on your streets, with report requests ready.
Worth knowing
- One Reddit comment. The bot solves the portal's CAPTCHA, which many sites don't allow, so approving each request yourself is safer. Public records rules and fees vary by county.
Prompt
Cleaned version rewritten from the source — not a direct quote.
Every morning at [time], download [county]'s public daily incident report for [district]. List each incident's type, address, time and case number. Check whether any happened on these streets: [list]. If none, don't message me. If any did, send me a map with them marked and the details. For each one, draft a public records request for the report in [portal] and show it to me before submitting. Keep a list so nothing is requested twice.
